So Many Mattresses

Do you ever wonder who is buying all those beds and mattresses? It is incredible how many mattress stores there are in our local area, not to mention the greater Houston area. And the commercials never stop. We hear about memory foam, air chamber, pillow tops and more. We simply must have one of he adjustable beds or we will never get a proper night's sleep. Give me a break!

Phones for the Office

We are in the midst of a pretty big expansion of our church complex. We are adding new class rooms and office space. We will be needing new phones for the three extra offices. Right now our deacons and staff are investigating small business phone systems to see which one best fits our needs and can be expanded if it is needed in the future.

Angie and BP

I am not a big follower of celebrities. But today I saw pictures of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt at some big Hollywood function. They showed the dress Angelina was wearing, and I wondered if it was a formal gown or maternity clothing. Then I heard the rumor that the star couple may be expecting twins!

Shopping With My Wife!

I went to with my wife to a local department store. While she was trying on some clothes, I wandered back to the sporting goods section to look at a few things we may want on our upcoming vacation. When I finished, I went back to meet my bride, but I found her in the small appliance department, looking at espresso machines. She did not buy one, but I would not be surprised to see one in the kitchen in the next few days!!

Sackett On the Outer Banks

Louis L'Amour is one of my favorite authors. He is primarily known as a writer of Western novels. But he also has a series of books built around a family that came to this country in the late 1500s. He chronicles the advancement of the frontier to the west by tracing the migration of the Sackett family over more than two hundred years. From the arrival of Barnabas Sackett on the Outer Banks and his establishing a settlement in Carolina to the election of Orrin Sackett to the Senate, the journey is a joy to read.

Financial Reporting

I am not very fond of numbers. I have long said that if they are not for figuring batting averages, I am not interested. But of course that is not very good for sound business practices. Fortunately for guys like me, there are very effective soft ware products that will help with financial reporting that is necessary to comply with regulations and to keep accurate records.

Calendars Everywhere

At this time of the year many of the merchants and service providers in the community, especially those I frequent, have sent out their custom printed calendars as promotional items for their company or organization. I have chosen a small one with a magnet for the refrigerator, another with big numbers and beautiful landscapes for my office and one with a sports theme for our grandsons' room. Nice!

Cold Weather Gear

In getting ready to take my family on our first snowboarding and skiing vacation, I asked a member of the congregation who is a long time skier what I need in the way of cold weather clothes. He told me not to settle for anything less than the best. He suggested that volcom clothing is the best way to assure that my family will be ale to function and still stay warm. I will take him at his word.

Term vs Whole Life

One of the best financial decisions I ever made was to move from buying whole life insurance policies to term life. Once I found got the term life insurance quotes, I made the change through my insurance agent. I then made sure that the difference between the premiums for the whole life policy and the term policy went into a savings vehicle or investment that paid more earnings than the insurance company offered. And I got more insurance on my life as well!

Homeless Veterans

I was watching a discussion of the assertion by presidential candidate John Edwards that 200,000 veterans are homeless because of the economy. The analysts were critical of the position. Not that of the number of vets that live on the streets, but that the cause for more than ninety percent of the homeless veterans is drug or alcohol dependence or mental health issues. The conclusion is that the VA needs more emphasis on addiction treatment and mental health treatment.

Community Awareness

Our congregation is doing all we can to raise the awareness of our fellowship in the minds of our neighbors and fellow citizens of our community. We are using all the tools we can afford to put our name in view of the community. We are using magnetic calendars, books, advertising pens, DVDs and, of course, word of mouth. We hope to open doors to dialog with as many as possible.

Tejada Has A Bad Day

I can't imagine a much worse day than that had by Miguel Tejada on Tuesday. it began with the announcement that Congress wants the Justice Department to investigate whether Tejada had lied to federal investigators in the steroid investigation. Then later came word that Miguel's older brother, 37, had been killed in a motorcycle/SUV collision.

It must have been hard to accept all that bad news.

Masters In Psychology

Whether a student is seeking a bachelor's degree in information technology or business or a PHD or masters in psychology, he or she can find it online at Capella University. over 19,000 have enrolled in degree or certificate programs through Capella, with almost eighty five per cent pursuing a graduate degree. Capella is an accredited institution and its graduates are finding success in the market place.

The ease of accessibility of courses on line make seeking a degree in that manner a very attractive option. When you add to that the fact that your do not have to leave your home and seek housing in a college town, it is no wonder that more and more folks are moving in that direction.

Valentine's Selections

I guess it is never too early to think about what you are going to get for your wife for Valentine's Day. Fortunately after forty years of marriage, I have quit trying to find ways around the whole merchandising ploys of the day. I know I must participate. But also my choices are narrowed a bit. Long gone are the days of wondering if I should shop for sexy chemises or alluring perfumes. My wife is very practical these days. But I dare not miss providing her with an acknowledgment of my love for her!

Expanding My Workout

I mentioned here yesterday that our family recently joined the new YMCA in our neighborhood, and that I have been on a routine for a few months now. Last night I asked my wife if she has tried the ellipticals and whether she thinks they will help build my cardio health. She said she has and that she likes them better than the treadmill. I will give them a try today!

Thanks To My Grandma!

When my grandmother passed away, part of the inheritance money I received went toward a new 39 inch Samsung Hi Definition television and home theater system. I am not a very handy man, so I paid to have someone install both the television and the speaker system. I did not want to skimp on the quality, so I secured the best HDMI cables I could in order to insure the best quality sound for my new system!

Improving My Cardio Health

When the YMCA opened in our neighborhood last fall, I signed our family up for membership. Since then I have been keeping up a good routine on some of the weight machines and a treadmill. It is my intention this year to also add some time on the ellipticals and the stair climbers in order to really stimulate good cardio vascular health.

Borrowing a Friend's Pick Up

Like most folks who own a home for very long, there are times when a pick up truck comes in handy. I have many times had to borrow one for hauling things away from the house or bringing them home after purchase. I love it when the trucks I borrow have a durable sprayed on truck bed liner. That means I will not scrape the paint on someone's vehicle when I am doing my heavy moving!

Midas and Me

What do Ramses, Alexander, King Midas and Auric Goldfinger have in common? Each of them recognized the value of gold, its beauty and magic, but especially its ability to create fortune, maintain wealth and generate power. Each in their own way made great investments to obtain vast stores of gold so that they would be able to hold sway over a wide, and ever growing, portion of the population of the world.

I am not interested in ruling the world or extending my power over a segment of the population, but I am certainly interested in maintaining my position in the economy so that I will be able to retire with confidence! So gold is in my portfolio

Family Resolution

When the family got together for a big meal and lots of football watching on New Year's Day, someone said that they had never been to Las Vegas. The conversation led to a suggestion that we find a date when we could all go, then pick out a Vegas hotel where we could all stay for a few days. It might be the first time I ever heard of a family making a resolution on New Year's Day. I hope this one does not fall to the wayside like so many resolutions do!

My Neighbor Drives Me Crazy

My next door neighbor tends to obsess about his car, a Chrysler 300, a little too much! For example, a few days before Christmas, "What is your favorite Chrysler 300 accessory? I stood there dumbfounded. I did not know there was such a big selection that I should have a favorite. That is until he showed me a web site that offers an assortment of grilles, interior accessories and so many more.

I think he was trying to let me know what he wanted for Christmas. He got a fruit cake!
